CINCINNATI (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday announced a major safety alert for Celebrex, the first widely used painkiller to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of arthritis.
The FDA approved Celebrex in 2003 for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee and rheumatoid arthritis in adults.
The agency added a new warning to its warning labels for the drug for osteoarthritis of the hands and wrists, as well as rheumatoid arthritis of the joints, in June 2007.
The warning also listed a warning for the treatment of acute pain after a previous treatment with a Celebrex-containing painkiller that also was not approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
The agency said that Celebrex’s side-effect profile in the United States would be similar to that of its branded version.
“Celebrex is not approved for the treatment of osteoarthritis of the hands and wrists,” the FDA said in a statement.
The agency also added that the drug’s label for rheumatoid arthritis was updated in September 2013 and updated in January 2014.
The FDA also warned consumers that the drug’s label warning for rheumatoid arthritis was updated in March 2016 and updated in April 2017.

It may also increase your risk of other side effects. Avoid consumption of alcohol as it may worsen side effects. You may notice a difference in your mood after taking Celebrex (see Section 4.2). If you notice any of the following side effects, you should stop taking this medicine and call your doctor as soon as possible: pain in the chest, pain when passing blood or when passing blood, swelling, redness, itching, irritation, itchy or runny nose, red or black stools. If you notice any of the following chest pain, itchy feeling, cough or shortness of breath, fast heartbeat (if accompanied with beating or heart palpitations), dizziness or weakness, shortness of breath or unusual breathing time, sudden loss of vision, sudden hearing, sudden numbness or swelling of hands and feet, stomach pain, itching or burning feeling, redness or swelling of the mouth or throat.

Follow the prescribed dosage and how with the tablets, swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew or break the tablets. This will help you to remember.

If any of these symptoms worsen or last for a longer time, you should stop taking this medicine. Do not use this medicine after the expiry date printed on the pack. Keep out of the sight and reach of children.

Anaglycex, Advil, Motrin (100 mg), Aleve (200 mg), and Ibuprofen (100 mg) are all NSAIDs that cause a drop in blood pressure when taken with Celecoxib. Celecoxib is generally safe with or without food, but excessive alcohol consumption may cause dizziness. Ibuprofen is not as commonly used with Celebrex. Celecoxib is more widely used with ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is not recommended for use in children aged 6 months to 17 years. Use of other NSAIDs may increase the risk of GI bleeding. Do not use Celebrex with ibuprofen unless directed to do so by your doctor. Use of other NSAIDs may increase the risk of a severe allergic reaction (such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat) which may require immediate medical attention. If an allergic reaction occurs, discontinue use and seek medical help right away. Do not use ibuprofen with celecoxib or any other NSAID until you have determined if the potential interactions are outweighable by avoiding or reducing your concurrent use of these medications.

In conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, excess production of prostaglandins by your body can lead to pain and inflammation. Celebrex 100mg Tablet works by decreasing the production of prostaglandins, effectively reducing pain and inflammation.
Do not take Celebrex 100mg Tablet if you are allergic to Celebrex 100mg Tablet or any of its ingredients. Inform your doctor if you had reactions to sulfonamide medicines, suffer from ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines, or experienced adverse reactions to NSAID medications like aspirin.
Before starting the treatment, inform your doctor because it is recommended to not take this medicine if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding. Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease, have inflammatory intestinal conditions, or have heart-related issues such as heart failure, heart disease, or circulation problems. Additionally, if you have had surgeries on leg arteries or have a history of blood circulation problems, this medicine usage should be avoided. Celebrex 100mg Tablet contains lactose. If you are sugar intolerant, consult your doctor before using this product. This medicine is for adults only, it is not for use in children.
Inform your doctor about if you have a history of stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding (avoid if currently present), are on acetylsalicylic acid or antiplatelet therapies, use blood clotting or corticosteroid medications, or simultaneously use other non-acetylsalicylic NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
Report your doctor if you have conditions such as smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, compromised heart, liver, or kidney function, fluid retention, dehydration, past severe allergic reactions to medications, ongoing infections, or are over 65 years old.
